Dining table needs makeover

Hi everyone, I'd be grateful for advice with how best to tackle re-finishing a dining table.

Its a pale wood (unsure what it is), about 5 years old, modern style (very solid, 'square' lines). The finish has started to lift clear of the surface in places and it needs re-doing. The original work seems to have been a bit slap-dash and hasn't lasted. The retailer has since closed-up shop.

My question is: how can I tell what finish was used on it - and hence how best to restore it to a protective surface?
