you sholud have no problems diconecting the flue if its not used but if you have a pre cast flue most of it is built directly into the wall with maybe a metal pipe going through the loft that part would be the only bit able to make a noise i would check on the roof to see if you have a loose chimney cowl first as might only be a quick fix

best to use aspestalux fire board can pick it up at your local builders merchant or failing that aluminuim plate and stove rope around the edges
