alexspantry Posted October 2, 2024 Report Posted October 2, 2024 I am currently in the process of renovating our living room. We have recently ripped up the old carpet to get down to the bare floorboards underneath the carpet, underlay and vintage lino that was down to discover a massive slope down towards my exterior wall. The majority of the floor is level which is ideal ready for the new SPC/LVT flooring to go down but we have an issue, approx. 1 metre from the exterior wall we have a slope down, we lose about 38mm (1 ½ inch) drop. I've climbed down under the floorboards into the crawlspace below and the joists are solid (no damp or damage) they are just installed lower that the others in the room. I am looking for suggestions on how to "raise" the dropped part of the floor so it's level with the rest of the floor, hopefully without having to rip off the skirting board, jack up the old joists and prop them up with supports. If there are any suggestions, please I'm all ears. Thanks. Quote
Rich Posted 5 hours ago Report Posted 5 hours ago Hi Alex Apologies for the long cold silence... Life has really got in the way lately... Did you ever solve this? I'd start by looking for the reason it slopes off like that. What year was the house build and what part of the country is it in? Was it sloped before taking up all the existing coverings or it was only noticed once the coverings were removed? One thing I would be inclined to check is the neighbours houses... Do they have the same thing? (See what I did there? Inclined.., ahhh, I'll get my coat... Taxi...) There could, although unlikely, be a solid reason for it, which a little research may reveal. But if it's isolated to just you and nothing unfolds, then it could just be a single bit of bad luck. The best way around it is to source the exact same wood, in width, and simply make a shim to sit on top of the joist, but this would then create another problem, as I assume, your skirting boards are all installed at the height of the floor, so would also need raising up. Did you get any pictures of it? Quote
