Fake window

I was thinking of cutting a hole in the furred out wall in my basement to put in a fake window. I was thinking of using an "translucent" material to fill in the panes. I was thinking of installing a double hung window and back lighting it to give the illusion of daylight.

Any suggestions for an opaque material either glass, plexiglass, "translucent" sticker,...?

Any suggestions for back lighting? I want it to give the illusion of daylight so I was thinking I don't want the light footcandles to vary too much.
