Hiya Will Glad to be of help... Why not tell us a bit about yourself before steaming straight in? Always nice to help others that take the time to post a great intro

Hi Sue Skirting boards are deliberately meant to have gaps around the bottom, for ventilation, and for carpets to be fitted under. It sounds like your carpet fitter hasnt got a clue what he is talking about, because they are meant to fit whats called a gripper track around the edge of the floor, which is a strip of small nails pointing upwards that grip the carpet, and the carpet itself is meant to go over the gripper track and under the skirting board, hence the term "Fitted carpet", as this stops the edges of the carpets from rolling upwards and/or curling over time, and the gripper tracks keep the carpet stretched tightly so that it doesnt bubble in places. The gap under your skirting boards, it should be about 1 or 2 centimetres at the most... You would only put those wooden strips down if you were to have whats called a wooden "floating floor" fitted, typically laminate boards that click together. when your carpet is fitted, they use a kicker tool to stretch the carpet, which is a handheld tool that has little points on the end to grip the carpet, and by slamming it with there knees towards the wall, it stretches the carpet flat towards the gripper tracks that hold it in place, and a simple cold chisel to tuck it under the skirting board.. If you didnt have the gaps, then the carpet is trimmed a bit more, and the excess is tucked behind the gripper rod/track.. Have you got a picture of the gaps under your skirting boards?

Ah haa, nice one Mike... Takes a bit these days to get your own property.. Wish we had bought a bungalow, stairs are a pain in the backside, especially for getting furniture in/out.. I dread the day we move Ask as much as you like, and also, anything you learn, drop in and post a tutorial if you can, now I've upgraded the site today

Hiya MDE.. Do we have to call you MDE? lol Replacing 100 joists is a serious bit of DIY mate. Dont bust your back doing all that. I assume your apartment is a split level house then, conversion job more likely if your also fitting sound proofing? Got any pic's of the job? Cheers Rich

Hiya Dan Thanks for the awesome intro mate... Certainly look forward to hearing more from you soon, and I could pick your brains actually about drainage pipes on my own place... Sounds like you have had a right good go at DIY already, that seriously is the deep-end.. I remember watching the builders gut my bathroom, move the toilet and sin, then tear out the old crappy bath and fit a new shower cubicle, and thought "Glad I'm not trying this.. Takes some serious work. Thanks for joining

Hi Hayley One thing that works well is to glue down some sandpaper in places like main walkways. Obviously not glue down a huge sheet of it, but cut to strips, like those speed strips you see in the road.. You can actually buy some stuff that sticks down to give surfaces some grip, but I cant remember what its called now, and there are a few different types, and those are more designed for the job and dont wear out like sandpaper would. You often find them on the edges of stairs, so if you search for "Stair edging strips" or something like that, you should find something suitable.
